Woodblock print (reprint), Published by Tokyo National Museum - Katsushika Hokusai (1760-1849) - Bay of Noboto - From the series "Thirty-six Views of Mount Fuji" - Late 20th century

Katsushika Hokusai is one of the most influential artists of Japan, inspiring such famous painters as Van Gogh etc..When Hokusai was 70-years-old and at the peak of his career, he began work on a series of woodblock prints. These prints became known as Thirty-six Views of Mt.Fuji.

Noboto, a small fishing village, was located on the east coast of the bay of Edo, but outside the city proper. The beach at Noboto had shallow water for a good distance, an ideal place for people to dig clams. There was a small shrine on the hill above the beach, and the two torii gates most likely belonged to it. Snow-covered Mount Fuji is seen through the larger torii.
