Woodblock print by Torii Kotondo (1900-1976) (Ishukankokai Published Limited Edition Commemorative reprint) - Lip Rouge - fromt the series 'Twelve Aspects of Women' - 1980s
With the consent of Kotondo's heirs, a small commemorative edition of his prints was reproduced by publisher Ishukankokai (only 100 sets of 12 images, the woodblocks were subsequently destroyed). These reprints were made according to the exact same standards as the originals. Expert woodcarvers were contracted and they produced woodblocks of the highest quality. The printers then made the reprints with the same attention to quality and detail as in the originals. These fantastically beautiful reprints, printed on handmade paper, feature the same colours and mica details as the originals.
Torii Kotondo is one of the most famous shin-hanga artists of the 20th century. He excelled in the art of women's prints. His output is limited and only encompasses a total of 22 works. The number of prints produced of each image was also small. Today, original Kotondo prints are among the most sought-after woodblock print images and are very valuable.
The original was produced in 1932.
Kotondo's works are very rare, as are the reprints from 1980s by Ishukankokai.
Publisher: Ishukankokai (including red 'money bag' seal)
Watermark in the bottom-left margin (photo 14).
The print is sold with its original presentation folder (photos 16-19). The print is enclosed within a beautiful inner folder with paper around it and a protective lining, which in turn sits in a sturdy outer folder. See photos 16-19.
Large oban size:
Image measurements (excluding margins): 41 x 26 cm
Total measurements: 48.5 x 33 cm
The woodblock print is in excellent condition. Excellent colours and very fine lines (see the hairs, for example). The mirror is printed with slight mica. Fantastic bokashi shading in the face, hands and kimono. Extensive use of 'baren sujizuri' (circular traces) in the background. A perfect duplication of Kotondo's original. Please view the photos for the details.
The woodblock print will be shipped by registered post, in sturdy cardboard packaging.
