The comic book writer came up with the concept of clear line as decisive style characteristic for his work at the end of the 1970s at a Hergé-exhibition in Rotterdam, "Tintin in Rotterdam". In this regard Swarte means a drawing style with characteristics like: clear contour lines, bright colour planes without perspective via shadow, without details. This gives a maximum and clear legibility of the drawing.
During the presentation of his collection ‘Bijna compleet’, early 2012, he said about his work: "In my comics I try to combine the freedom of the underground illustrators with the craftsmanship of the old masters".
