Erotik, Esoterik, Illustriert, Literatur - Anzahl: 1

First edition of this incredible Art Nouveau illustrated book celebrating fantasy, woman, cabaret and circus. The text is illustrated with 200 etchings by greatest artists and poster illustrators at the turn of 19th Century: Bac, Bottini, Cappiello, Chalon, Chéret, Coulon, Darbour, Detouche, Gerbault, Gorguet, Guillaume, Haudu, Helleu, Lebègue, Louis Legrand, Lucas, Mantelet, Louis Morin, Notor, Orazi, Alonso Perez, Rassenfosse, Robaudi, Auguste Rodin, Félicien Rops, Guirand de Scevola, Simonaire, Steinlen, Trachsel, Van Beers, De la Vaudère, Vierge, Vogler and Willette.

Good overall condition: cover is slightly rubbed, some fold on pages and other minor defects.

¶ As the first female clown, the figure of Lulu had haunted Félicien Champsaur’s imagination since 1888, inspiring him to write two pantomimes and several prose texts, among which the illustrated novel Lulu, roman clownesque (1901), which proved to be central to the author’s idea of the modernist novel he wished to create. One can interpret the protagonist’s path to fame as a mise en abyme of the rise of the new narrative genre Champsaur was espousing (one in which text and images are combined). (...) While Lulu’s secrets are indisputably tied to the power of seduction that is particular to an age-old idea of femininity, her character, brilliantly orchestrated by Champsaur throughout his 426-page novel, holds many more. The goal of Lulu is to illustrate, both literally and metaphorically, the way forward, in order to bring about modernism through a new kind of novel in the modernist period.
