The Considerazioni generali sui benefici dell'equitazione are infused with classic and rhetorical reminiscences; from a medical point of view, Benvenuti draws largely from the writings of Sydenham, Pechey, Baglivi, Salvi, Hoffmann, Boerhaave, etc., relying on the effects of riding on blood circulation, elasticity of muscle fibres and of arterial and lymphatic vessels, hinting at the controversy about blood oxygenation.
Riding is recommended for its action of stimulation on the activity of "animal spirits", on liver function, digestion, lymphatic circulation and - almost like a universal panacea - as a remedy for arteriosclerosis, dropsy, apoplexy, hysteria and various other diseases.
The text concludes with a series of recommendations on the practice of the sport and with various hygiene rules.
Well preserved book, perfectly readable with some browning on the title page and on the other pages that does not affect the consultation of the text.
Bound presumably in the early 1800s with beautiful eighteenth-century parchment.
